Amy Winehouse was cremated yesterday and mourners paid their respects to the talented singer whose demons overcame her at the tender age of 27. Though many present described the service as “moving,” it also had quite a few light moments. The memorial service was widely attended, with music industry executives, band mates, friends and family gathering to say goodbye to the girl with the golden pipes reminiscent of a bygone era of music. The service was held in a synagogue in Edgware, North London.

After she was found dead last weekend in her London apartment, the media breathlessly reported on the events surrounding her death and sometimes-tragic life. Among those in attendance at the service were close friend Kelly Osbourne, wearing her hair in the beehive that Winehouse preferred in life, Mark Ronson, who produced her album “Back to Black” and her boyfriend Reg Traviss.

In saying goodbye to his daughter, Winehouse’s father Mitch said “Goodnight my angel. Sleep tight. Mommy and Daddy love you ever so much.” A spokesperson for Winehouse noted that the eulogy was also “funny” with Mitch “telling stories about her childhood, people were laughing like a celebration, like they all remembered the stories themselves.” It was fitting for there to be some light moments, as Winehouse herself lived a life that, while far from perfect, was often about happiness and love. A representative for Winehouse noted, “It was emotional, it was happy and it was sad. It was everything really.” Another in attendance noted, “It was very moving yet quite very humorous at times. It was a wonderful tribute to Amy.”

Liz Taylor was, during her career as a movie star and sex symbol, almost larger than life. In death, she has left behind fans around the world. Some of them – those who can afford it – will have the opportunity to purchase some of the late actress’s prized possessions and take away a piece of the woman they so dearly loved. The auction house Christie’s will manage a worldwide tour and auction of some of Taylor’s personal possessions. The collection that Christie’s is gathering is of museum quality and will include various items that include jewelry, clothing, accessories, memorabilia and art work.

The tour will last for three months and will begin in September. At the end of the international tour, the last stop will be in New York in December and there will be a 10-day exhibition that will fill Christie’s rather large Rockefeller Center gallery. Thereafter, Auctions will take place from December 13 through December 16. Some of the proceeds of the auction and tour will go to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which Taylor herself started in 1993.

According to Marc Porter, chairman and president of Christie’s Americas, the exhibition will be “a window into the world of a true icon, a rare woman who was at once an international film star, loving mother, successful businesswoman, and generous humanitarian.” Porter added, “This collection of her many cherished possessions will bring us closer to the essence of Elizabeth Taylor’s unique spirit, and promises to inspire admiration, delight, and at times, sheer wonder, in all who come to see it.”
