Different Types of Songs

Classical Songs
As the name suggests, classical songs are those in which traditional music has a main role. These songs were first composed by artists like Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, just to name a few. However, these songs have had a substantial impact on the music we hear today. Every country has a culture, which is clearly apparent in its classical and folk songs. Good examples are:

☆ Canon in D major – Johann Pachelbel
☆ Symphony No. 9: Ode To Joy – Ludwig van Beethoven
☆ The Four Seasons – Antonio Vivaldi
☆ Hallelujah – Katherine Jenkins
☆ Heart of Courage – Two Steps From Hell

Pop Songs
Pop songs are those which have contemporary lyrics and an upbeat rhythm, basically for the youth culture. Some of the most popular artists are Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake, and Cher. The composition of pop songs concentrates more on music technology and recording instead of live performances. Rhythm and effects are two important elements in pop songs. Good examples are:

☆ Bye Bye Bye – N Sync
☆ Beat It – Michael Jackson
☆ I Want It That Way – Backstreet Boys
☆ Baby One More Time – Britney Spears
☆ Every Breath You Take – The Police

Rock Songs
Rock songs are most popular among teenagers and youngsters. They consist of clear pieces of lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, and keyboards as some of the main instruments. When the instruments are played in sync, they sound energetic along with the vocals. Most popular rock artists are Europe, Creed, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bryan Adams and many other good ones. Good example are:

☆ The Final Countdown – Europe
☆ Jump – Van Halen
☆ Smoke On The Water – Deep Purple
☆ Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
☆ Sweet Child o’ Mine – Guns N’ Roses

Metal Songs
Metal songs are a bit more hard-sounding than rock songs. These songs have high pitches and screaming vocals, heavy guitar leads, and solid drum work. In a majority of metal songs, power chords and riffs are used. They may consist of random lyrics, as the primary focus is on the music. Few of the metal music legends are Whitesnake, Metallica, Dokken, Winger, Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen, Scorpions, etc. Good examples are:

☆ Fear of the Dark – Iron Maiden
☆ Rainbow in the Dark – Dio
☆ Still of the Night – Whitesnake
☆ Enter Sandman – Metallica
☆ Rock You Like A Hurricane – Scorpions Read the rest of this entry »

Write Lyrics for a Song

The first thing you need to do before starting to pen down your own lyrics, is to come up with a subject or topic of your choice. The topic can be absolutely anything like, love, relationships, religion, nature, heartbreaks, a particular person or even rebellious songs. If you are writing the song for an audience, it is important to choose a topic which will be liked and appreciated by them. So choose the topic carefully, as it will lay a strong foundation for the song.

You can either choose a tune or melody after selecting the topic, or think of one once you are done with writing the lyrics, whichever you are comfortable with. Some people come up with a melody right at the start as it gives them a flow while writing. The melody could be something you think of immediately after choosing the topic, or can be inspired from a song you might have already heard. If you want to settle for a melody after you are done with writing, it is fine. It can sometimes, bring out just the right melody for the song.

You now will have to sit down and pen at least five verses and one chorus. This can be simple and is also a critical part of the song along with the melody. These verses generally have the same melody as the chorus and since they begin the song, you need to have some idea in mind, about the topic you have chosen. If you are not satisfied, these verses can always be changed later on.

The eight verses which form the middle part of the song are considered to be a little tough to write. These verses generally have a different tune or melody than the rest of the song. Also these verses are the ones which form the core of your song and you should convey your feelings through them. This may take some time, so be patient. Keeping the verses short is also an option, which many people prefer. Read the rest of this entry »

Write Lyrics For a Song

Wordplay.
Some songs are distinct because they contain plays on words. For example:
“You are my greatest mistake.” (Sheryl Crow)
“The only thing that looks good on me is you.” (Bryan Adams)

Mysterious.
Some songs seem compelling because of ambiguity (what does the singer actually mean?) or what the songs leave out. It leaves a person guessing. For example:

“I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that…” (Meatloaf)
“Because the night”
“Don’t call me daughter, not fair to me.” (Pearl Jam)

Unexpected phrasing.
Surprising people with a phrase that is totally unexpected can deliver a big effect. For example:

“I may not always love you…” in God Only Knows

Story.
Some songs tell a story or a tale of some interesting experience or encounter.

“A long, long time ago…” in Don McLean’s American Pie
“The Story of my Life” by Deana Carter

Question.
Many songs pose questions, some of which may not have answers. For example,

“Why do birds suddenly appear?” by the Carpenters
“What’s my name?”, “Who wants to know?”, “Who am I?”

Repetition.
Many songs use a repeated word or phrase. For instance, count the number of repeated words in the following songs:

“I Believe” by Blessid Union of Souls
“Every Breath You Take” by the Police

Cinematic.
Some songs have lurid, descriptive words that paint a scene:

“The screen door slams; Mary’s dress waves…’
“I see Maryanne walking away…”

Avoid cliches.. Unless you can add a new twist!
You should steer clear of the following cliches, unless you can add an unexpected, refreshing twist to them: Read the rest of this entry »
